The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) an institution of The Aga Khan Development Network, is completing a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018. This expansion aims at improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to become an ultramodern 170 bed facility in order to increase its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital.

The Phase II development is focusing on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services, and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of orthopedics and trauma, diagnostic imaging, critical care, and women and child health programmes. The Hospital is ISO and JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers postgraduate medical education programs leading to Master’s of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Surgery.

It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania. Currently, 20 such clinics have been established across the country and linked the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

We are seeking for enthusiastic and qualified experienced personnel for the following positions:
CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST - 1 POSITION
JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Pathologist directly the unit head and will oversee the running of Haematology, Chemistry and Microbiology sections. In this role, the Clinical Pathologist assists with collection of bone marrow aspirates and trephine biopsies, assist in the performance of dynamic tests, offer guidance to technical staff in the laboratory, quality control in the relevant laboratory sections, test interpretation and review, carrying out internal audits, and technical staff, evaluation of quality indicators, consultations with clinicians and diagnosis of hospital patients. He/she will advise and oversee the implementation of new tests and may also provide verbal, written and telephone orders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review and examine patients as required by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
  • Assist in the collection of bone marrow aspirates and trephine biopsies that require written consent from patients sent to the hospital laboratory.
  • Counseling and explanation of test relevance, test procedure and adverse events if any
  • Ensure proper specimen handling and preservation to ensure its integrity and subsequent validity of result.
  • Advice clinicians on appropriate test selection, specimen type, collection procedure and transport conditions where necessary
  • Review and sign off abnormal test results requiring pathologists consult.
  • Interpret peripheral blood films, bone marrow aspirates and trephines
  • Engage clinicians on test selection and result interpretation of specialized tests where appropriate.
  • Ensure timely reporting of critical values.
  • Participate in discussions with relevant members of the laboratory management and technical staff to come up with standard operating procedures.
  • Assist the quality assurance unit in its periodic assessment of laboratory adherence to ISO 15189:2012 guidelines  

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
  • Masters of Medicine in Clinical Pathology.
  • Super Specialty Training or Fellowship is an added advantage.
  • At least 4 years experience in related field.
  • Well versed with QMS principles.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and commitment to advancing workplace diversity.
  • Willingness to be flexible in work habits and assigned tasks. Adaptable and comfortable to institutional work environment.
  • Focused and detail oriented.
