Position: Librarian
Overview
The School of St Jude is an education institution, entirely funded by charitable donations, that provides free, high-quality primary and secondary scholarships to 1,800 of the poorest and brightest students in the Tanzanian region of Arusha.
We are looking to appoint a Librarian to manage the Library Reader Services. The ideal candidate will have a passion for community development and a strong interest in NGO’s. 

Key Responsibilities
  • To correctly manage circulation procedures, including borrowing, returns, and over dues, using the library software programs correctly. 
  • To ensure correct shelving procedures are maintained, items in accurate Dewey decimal classification and /or alphabetical order and regular shelf checking. 
  • To issue text books to all students from grade 1-7 in the first week of school opening. 
  • Prepare the text books issuance form containing all the textbook titles for the students and parents to sign acknowledging the receipt of the text books. The student must return the form the next day. 
  • To ensure that all students return all text books and library books to the library in the last week of school in each term. 
  • To ensure that students follow the Library Rules and that library property is not lost or stolen. 
  • To improve upon the current library procedures including security. 
  • To assist and/ or cover for the Library Teacher when he/she is absent. 
  • To do all library technical services such as cataloguing and acquisition procedures as required. 
  • Manage library maintenance procedures, including covering and reinforcing new books with relevant materials, processing non book materials, and repairing worn or damaged items as required. 
  • Guide the students and staff to choose and get the right library resources for learning and reading for pleasure. 
  • Prepare the lost report or damage of any library resources and submit to the Academic Deputy to write letters to parents for replacement.
  • Manage the replacement of library resources lost or damaged by teachers and other staff. 
  • To be responsible for library security, including opening and closing procedures, bell ringing, and the safety and good behaviour of students and fellow staff member. 
  • Manage the library bookings for teachers. 
  • Supervise interns who work in the library. 
  • Supervise the library monitors. 
  • Receive and brief visitors about library operations. 
  • Ensure the school library is well organized, clean and tidy in order to motivate the learners and staff to make use of resources in there. 
  • To do library stock-taking within two weeks after closing the school.

Teaching
  • Develop schemes of work (in collaboration with your HOD and other members of the department)
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lessons to a range of classes
  • Prepare and maintain classroom norms and regulations which inspires the students to learn
  • Devise and write new curriculum materials.
  • Identify, develop, select and use a range of different teaching and learning resources and equipment
  • Use relevant technology and strategies to support the teaching and learning in the classroom
  • Be fully aware of the students’ who need and support them individually
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities within the lesson.
  • Fill in the log books at the end of every week and schemes of work at the end of each month and submit it to the HOD for signing.

Student supervision
  • Ensure that students always dress in proper uniform and if not, write them a uniform slip for a uniform replacement. 
  • Ensure that students behave well and in an appropriate manner all the time while in the library, on the school compound, during assembly, at lunch time, while waiting for the bus, etc. 
  • Never leave any student under your supervision unattended and if it is necessary for you to leave, ensure that they are under the supervision of another member of staff. 
  • Always make sure that all students are present before you lead them to move in quiet orderly lines from the classroom to the dining hall, computer labs, library, and car parking on excursions and on their return. 
  • Whenever travelling on School buses, the employee is expected to help ensure good behaviour & safety of students. 
  • Manage pupil’s discipline and behaviour all the time and apply appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour, in accordance with the rules and disciplinary policy of the school. 
  • Monitor the names of students who continuously fail to uphold the values of the school and report them to the Discipline Master where necessary.
Meetings and Communication
  • Attend and participate in departmental, level, committee meetings and any whole school events.
  • Meet twice monthly with your supervisor.
  • Speak English all the time while communicating with employees, students and visitors in school.

Professional Development
  • Be prepared to learn how to use relevant technology to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
  • Be prepared to learn from others and be a lifelong learner.
  • Undergo regular observations and participate in regular in service training (INSET) as part of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Participate in all Professional Development organised by the school.

Teamwork and Support
  • Work with teachers on ethics and provide support and advice.
  • Cover for absent colleagues when required.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities and organise events such as outings, social activities and sporting events.
  • Play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive mission, ethos and policies and to encourage and ensure employees and students follow this example.

Other Duties
  • Periodically suggest improvements to the library procedures and submit them to your supervisor for approval.
  • Participate and support fellow staff in school mission-related activities such as all School Celebration Days throughout the year.
  • Participate in student selection process, in particular working after hours on rest days and public holidays up to 20 Saturdays per annum.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the school leader or the employer.

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes
  • Diploma in Library Management from School of Library Archives and Documentation Studies (SLADS).
  • Bachelor of Education will be additional advantage.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a library leadership role in a school.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational skills, time management, and ability to work independently.
  • Good computer skills – Microsoft Word, Excel.
