Duty Station: Unguja, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Start Date: October 15, 2025.
MCCC LTD, also known as Mwambao, facilitates a community-based network across various coastal areas, enabling local communities to learn from each other and engage in collective action on shared interests, such as influencing policy. Working with key international partners, Mwambao focuses on improving reef ecosystem health, enhancing the sustainability of key fisheries, and improving local well-being by including fishers in the management of their fishing grounds and providing opportunities for other livelihood activities.
2. Overview of the Role
Mwambao is seeking a Co-management Project Officer to lead the field-based implementation of a project aimed at improving marine resource co-management in Unguja. This project is being delivered in partnership with Blue Ventures International. The Project Officer will work with other Mwambao field officers in Unguja under the supervision of the Project Lead and the Executive Director.
The successful candidate will be based in Unguja and will spend a significant amount of time on site visits. This is a twelve-month position with the opportunity for extension, subject to project funding. An initial three-month probation period will apply.
The Project Officer will be responsible for designing and implementing science-based management and monitoring plans. They will ensure these tools achieve desired results to support the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. The role involves close collaboration with District Authorities, particularly District Fisheries Officers, local communities, and other government and non-government organizations.

Conservation Zanzibar (MCCC LTD), established in 2010, is a leading
organization dedicated to helping communities in Tanzania’s coastal
areas develop strong and effective local resource management systems.
These systems are designed to support livelihoods and sustain marine

3. Key Responsibilities and Tasks
4. Required Qualifications and Experience
Education: - Build the capacity of target Socially Functioning Cooperatives (SFCs) and Collaborative Management Groups (CMGs) to implement sustainable marine resource management measures in local fishing grounds.
- Support and collaborate with partner institutions in the facilitation and implementation of CMG and SFC plans.
- Facilitate collaboration with partner institutions, including the District Council, local authorities, and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), to address biodiversity and seascape management issues.
- Support the capacity building of relevant authorities and institutions to effectively deliver marine resource co-management in their respective areas.
- Assist the Programme Manager in project monitoring and evaluation of conservation and social outcomes.
- Support the development of incentives and motivation to enhance compliance with marine resource management measures.
- Write reports suitable for submission to funding partners via the Programme Manager and maintain a project diary.
- Participate in and support Mwambao Coastal Community Network and MCCC LTD initiatives for community coastal conservation.
- Raise awareness both inside and outside project sites whenever possible.
- Perform other duties as required from time to time by the Programme Manager and/or the MCCC Senior Management Team.

4. Required Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in fisheries, ecology, natural resources management, or a related field.
- At least three years of relevant professional experience in fisheries and marine ecology within a Tanzanian context.
- An understanding of, and sensitivity towards, the cultural and livelihood contexts of rural/local coastal communities in Zanzibar and Pemba.
- Proven ability to work effectively without direct supervision while functioning as a key part of a team.
- Very strong oral and written communication skills in both Kiswahili and English, with the ability to build strong relationships with government and community partners.
- Proficient in computer literacy, especially with MS Word, Excel, and internet use, and skilled in technical report writing in English.
